Delhi accuses Pakistan of raising jihadis

INDIA declared yesterday it would confront its neighbour Pakistan over its alleged support for Islamic extremists.

As new foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon refused to back away from Indias claims of direct involvement by Pakistans ISI spy agency in Julys devastating terror bomb blasts on the Mumbai train system, the citys top policeman produced evidence that he said revealed new details of the extent of Islamabads involvement.

Commissioner A.N. Roy said intelligence reports on the activities of Azam Cheema, whom he described as the person in charge of training recruits for the jihadi Lashkar-e-Toiba movement based in Pakistan and aligned with al-Qaida, showed direct links between him and the Mumbai blasts.

Mr Roy said almost all those arrested following the Mumbai blasts had been trained by Cheema, whom, he said, is in this 50s and lives in a palatial house in Bahawalpur in Pakistan, which is guarded like a fortress.

He moves around with dozens of heavily armed bodyguards and escort cars. Every now and then he makes trips to Islamabad to meet VIPs, The Times of India quoted Mr Roy saying.

According to police, what they describe as hundreds of misguided Muslim youngsters willing to die are sent from India to Pakistan each year for weapons training in terrorist camps.
