New steps against dengue outbreak in Delhi

The Delhi Government has called a high level emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways to control the outbreak of dengue.

The meeting will be attended by the Delhi Health Minister, the Principal Secretary Health, the Director of General Health Services, the MCD Commissioner and the Municipal Health Officer of NDMC.

Dengue has so far killed 11 people in Delhi.

On Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi issued notices to a dozen hospitals in the capital for allowing mosquitoes breed on their premises.

The Delhi health department has deployed an additional 2400 officials to contain the outbreak.

It also plans to launch an intensive mass awareness drive through advertisements in newspapers about the disease and the necessary preventive measures such as keeping coolers clean and not accumulating water in and around residential and office complexes.

In all 448 cases have been confirmed so far, 247 from capital Delhi and 201 from regions nearby.

No bird flu threat in Delhi, says civic body

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Saturday said there was no immediate threat of a bird flu outbreak in the national capital even as the dreaded H5N1 virus surfaced in Maharashtra. "We have been keeping a vigil on birds coming into Delhi and have also conducted tests. We believe there is no immediate threat in the capital but we will take extra effort from now on," said KN Tiwari, a public health officer with the MCD.
