Delhi CM expresses concern over water shortage
Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit today expressed concern over the national capital constantly suffering from water shortage and blamed the neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for adding to the water woes of the national capital.
Speaking at the PHDCCI-organised Chief Ministers conclave of the northern states here, Dikshit said the part of the water problem being faced by Delhi was due to the uncertainty of getting water from Haryana and UP.
This keeps reoccurring as bad dream over and over again, she lamented.
She also said that water was a precious resource and its shortage also resulted from its mismanagement.
I believe it is drinking water which has to get precedence over the water for agri use. We dont have much water resources and the ground water level is going down, she said.
Touching the issue of environment, she said entire northern region has to look at it more carefully.
We need to use better fuel systems. The use of CNG has brought down pollution levels in Delhi. Our problem is that over 90,000 vehicles cross through the capital daily and if other states too can start using CNG, the pollution levels will further come down in the entire region, she said.
She also said that challenges of faster kind of urbanisation have resulted in about 8000 metric tonne of garbage being generated in Delhi every day.
She said that neighbouring states should also set up modern garbage treatment plants to overcome the problem.
Dikshit also touched the issue of e-governance, which besides inter-state barriers to trade and power and water sufficiency were the main issues raised at the one-day conclave.
