For the first time, the 700-year-old tradition of singing qawwalis is under attack at the famed Sufi shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin in the Indian capital.
Qawwalis are a key attraction at the shrine, and every Thursday thousands - Muslims as well as non-Muslims - crowd the dargah, located in the midst of narrow lanes of the Nizamuddin area to listen to the artistes.
Now, a cold war has erupted within the Muslim community: is qawwali Islamic or un-Islamic?
Those who preach the orthodox strand of Islam, known as Tablighs, are making it clear that singing of and listening to qawwalis - a Sufi tradition - should stop at the 14th century shrine.
The Tablighs believe that praying at shrines amounts to idol worship. They are objecting to the tradition of singing qawwalis, which are Sufi hymns, at the Nizamuddin dargah and at the nearby Hazrat Inayat Khan dargah.

To reduce passenger rush at the citys four major railway stations, Northern Railways intends to have Nizamuddin station and upcoming stations at Anand Vihar, Holambikalan and Bijwasan cater to region-specific trains besides handling regular traffic.
Nizamuddin station will handle most South-headed trains, Anand Vihar most trains heading to eastern India, Bijwasan will cater to trains going west while Holambikalan will be dealing with most North-headed trains.
The Anand Vihar terminal in east Delhi will handle the most trains among the four stations.

Delhi government has given its go ahead on filing of a review petition in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of S A R Geelani in Parliament attack case.
A proposal sent by the Delhi Police to the Delhi Administration seeking the go-ahead has been cleared, sources told PTI here today.
The proposal will now be required to be cleared by Lt Governor B L Joshi and the Union Home Ministry, they said.
The police had sent the proposal a few days back after a legal advice that it had a strong case against Geelani, a Delhi University Lecturer.
