New Delhi has ended a truce with rebels in Indias northeast and resumed a counter-insurgency operation after militants killed two people, including a policeman, an army official said on Sunday.
Military operations against the separatist United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) were suspended on August 13 by New Delhi, after the rebels offered to engage in peace talks to end the nearly three-decade-old conflict in the state of Assam.
Army operations have resumed and soldiers have moved out of their barracks in upper [eastern] Assam, a senior military commander told Reuters by phone from Dibrugarh, about 400km from Assams capital, Dispur.
The truce was initially for a few days but was subsequently extended after talks between government officials and representatives of Ulfa. But both sides had said it was not a formal ceasefire.

New Delhi today made it clear that teas should go through the auction system.
Minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh, who is here on a three-day tour, today asked the Tea Board to prepare a roadmap within a year for the creation of a mechanism so that teas would go through the auction route only.
Interacting with stakeholders of Assam tea industry, including labour unions, in a city hotel on issues concerning the industry, he said the mechanism should be such that producers find it attractive to send their teas through auction.

The Indian government has announced a US$ 80 million relief package for the victims of anti-Muslim riots in the western state of Gujarat in 2002. The families of the 1,169 people killed will receive 350,000 rupees (around US$ 8,300). Each of the 2,540 wounded will receive 150,000 rupees.
