Former Poverty Point Reservoir District Executive Director Mike Thompson of Delhi will be in federal court Monday to begin his trial on charges of violating federal law by using district employees to perform work on his private property.
Thompson was indicted by a federal grand jury in Shreveport in June 2007 on one count of violating the Hobbs Act.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Hobbs Act prohibits actual or attempted robbery or extortion affecting interstate or foreign commerce. The Hobbs Act was created to combat racketeering in labor-management disputes but is frequently used in connection with cases involving public corruption, commercial disputes and corruption directed at members of labor unions.

Seven men and seven women have been sworn in to hear the federal case against the former executive director of the Poverty Point Reservoir District.
Opening statements are scheduled Tuesday.
The jury was seated Monday in U.S. District Judge Robbie James' court to hear the charges against Mike Thompson, who is accused of using district employees to perform work on his private property.
There were nearly 150 instances from 1997 to 2002 in which an employee purportedly billed the district for performing personal work for Thompson, prosecutors have said.

New Delhi : Arguments on charges levied by the Delhi Police against Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Tariq Ahmed Dar and his accomplices in connection with capitals four Diwali eve blasts cases will commence on May 25.
The four cases which were transferred to district judges court for committal on April 26 have been slotted to the court of Additional Sessions Judge N K Gupta For further trial, which would start with it hearing the arguments on charges.
Three of the cases are regarding the blasts in Sarojini Nagar market, Paharganj and inside a DTC bus near Govindpuri.

A metro train caught fire early on Friday morning when it was on a trial run, an official said.
There were, however, no casualties or injuries as no commuter was present in the train during the incident.
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials, the train caught fire at around 1.30 am near Shadipur metro station, on the Dwarka-Barakhamba route. Fire brigade officials doused the blaze within 20 minutes.

Delhi-Gurgaon metro to start by June 2010
The Haryana Government on Wednesday said that the 14.5-km Metro railway line between Qutub Minar and Sushant Lok linking the Capital with Gurgaon would be operational by June 2010 before the start of the Commonwealth Games.
Talking to media persons after the project was cleared by the Group of Minister, Shakuntala Jakhu, Secretary, Town & Country Planning, Haryana, told media persons here that the Haryana Government would spend Rs.
