Air-India’s budget airline is set to begin direct service from Bahrain to Delhi from next April when the carrier ceases direct operations on this sector, an airline official said.
Dubai-based Air-India regional director Sanjeev Talwar admitted that scrapping of Air-India’s six flights from the kingdom would affect Bahrain customers, but there is no choice for the company as the demand is for budget travel.
‘’The no-frills Air-India Express has received good response for its service and is experiencing high load factor on Muscat, Abu Dhabi and Dubai sectors,'’ he said.
Once Bahrain and Doha flights are on, direct operations to Delhi would give Air-India Express a boost as it would be operating Boeing 737-800 aircraft with a capacity of 175 seats.
Talwar was quoted by the local media as saying that the total passenger revenue generated from the gulf was 12,000 crore Rupees, the same as the previous year, despite high competition.
There has also been a 17 per cent increase in traffic with 22,000 passengers from Bahrain between April 2004 to March 2005 compared to the previous financial year.
‘’Though there were a few cancellations in July this year due to technical problems, our on-time performance in general was 90 per cent,'’ Talwar added.

Delhi to go to the polls on April 5
Delhi will finally have a new civic body by April 10 as mandated by the Constitution with the State Election Commission on Friday announcing elections on April 5 for the 272 newly carved out wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Announcing the schedule, State Election Commissioner S. P. Marwah said notification for the elections would be issued on March 10 and the entire process would be completed by April 9. The model code of conduct comes into force with immediate effect.

The Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will present its revised budget estimates for the 2010-11 fiscal before the MCD House on Wednesday for final approval.
The Standing Committee will also present the budget estimates of the MCD Slum and JJ department for approval.
According to the Standing Committee chairperson R K Singhal, the budget estimates emphasise on increasing the MCD’s revenue and have a special focus on night shelters.
